Trailhead · the first season of side work
Nobody walks a new trail without stopping. Mark where you'll check the route.
Cairn Mark is a small reference for people adding a second, smaller income to a full-time job. We don't sell courses, tools or coaching. Most advice is about getting started. We set out four checkpoints for the first twelve weeks, and what to look at at each one before carrying on.
The cairn
Four stones, placed in order.
The first stone is reading: the platform's terms and fees, and your own employment contract. The second is your first honest hourly figure, worked out from real records rather than an advertised rate.
The third is a check on everything else: your job, your sleep, your household. The top stone is a decision. Keep going as you are, change something, or stop. Stopping at week twelve with clear records isn't failure; it's a route you now know.
Route notes
What to look at, checkpoint by checkpoint.
The weeks are a guide, not a rule. Some people reach the second checkpoint sooner, others later. What matters is not skipping one.
| Checkpoint | Look at | Good sign | Sign to slow down |
|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Platform terms, fee page, your contract | You can explain how you'll be paid and what it costs | Fees you can't find, or a clause you don't understand |
| Week 4 | Records: money kept ÷ hours spent | A figure you'd be content to keep earning | Hours far above what you planned |
| Week 8 | Your job, sleep and household | Nobody has noticed much change | Late nights, missed deadlines, tension at home |
| Week 12 | All of the above, together | A clear choice: keep, change or stop | Carrying on only because you've started |
Weather on the route
Conditions that change a plan.
None of these are reasons not to set out. They're what readers say they wish they'd checked before the first week.
- FEES
The rate isn't what arrives.
Platforms and payment services keep a share. Read the fee page before you start.
- TAX
Small amounts still count.
Side income is usually taxable. Keep a plain record from the first payment and check your tax authority's rules.
- FATIGUE
The second month is harder.
Early energy fades. Plan a pace you could keep in a busy month at work.
- CONTRACT
Your employer may have a say.
Some employment contracts limit outside or competing work. Read yours and ask HR about anything unclear.
- FRAUD
Offers that cost you to start.
Anyone asking for a fee, a kit purchase or help moving money isn't offering work. Walk away and report it.
